Splendid festivities and frivolous folk ~ Splendour in the grass 2016 fun, festival style July 26 2016, 0 Comments

Well it was one of those warm Byron winter days and there was no need for gumboots this year. The sun was shining and the smiles were out. there was certainly a sense of calmness compared top the muddy maddness of last year.
I was stoked to have my hands on a VIP access band with the most amazing stunning camp site over looking the ocean and the whole festival site.
The Kultcha collective stall was not there this year, Instead I was fortunate enough to be asked as the stylist and on costume design for a wonderful performance group making their debut in the global village world stage, NEREUS. Remember the name the are the next big thing in performance fusion. these have a japanese/ Australian fusion with deep tribal drumming and lashings of hip hop. Dance performance by the girls Grace and Lydia both bringing their unique dance styles along with lead singer and world known choreographer Travers Ross and Brad bringing their dance to the stage.
Music highlights were Flume, Montaigne rocked it and Opiuo 7pm Saturday set was cracking and popping unlike the midnight set. The Cure was good to pop my head in however a little like watching paint dry. That was just saturday for me, I would love to hear your favs in the comments for the days or sets I probably missed?
Festival dress code was sparkly, wild and adventurous, no limitations and boxer braids so you could keep the hair flick back while getting down to boogie.
Here are some snaps I captured on the Saturday, labels such as Lenni the label, Tree of life, Arnhem, Liberated heart, Native Riot and of course Kultcha collective.
Worn and spotted by the likes of Billie Billie, We the wild ones blog, Loz from the Native Riot, Coco Allen and festival queen Annalise mclachlan. I snuck myself into a few piccis too!

Family adventure through the outback adventure July 13 2016, 0 Comments

What an epic adventure! wide open roads and just the four of us (family) with no phones or technology.
Well im no photographer but between Bulan and I we gave it a crack.
Hope you enjoy and feel inspired to drive approximately 5,200 kms across the outback of Australia like we did. There really is so much to enjoy this fantastic scenery in what they call the real Australia.
Our images are taken from outback QLD, NT, WA then back up to Arnehem land and near the ocean is Darwin.

Deity of the Desert ~ Kultcha Collective March 15 2016, 0 Comments

This was one of those amazingly exciting yet so thrown together kinda photo shoots!

After a little magazine article we were featured in I had a lovely young woman contact me in regards to doing a collaborative photo shoot together, she said im a film photographer and i would love to work on styling a shoot together.

Of course I jumped straight onto to after seeing some of her images on her instagram page @the_dingo_chronicles

Maddie's humble approach to photography and her eye for art is something of an old soul, its deep yet playful at the same time and Oh what pleasure it was to have the opportunity to work on this shoot together!

Kim Meurs (Model) was a friend of Maddie's and opted to jump on board like the day before the shoot, she was incredible, so don to earth and such a natural and she couldnt wait to cozy up to this huge camel (Fatima the wonderful). @kim_meurs

I managed to get my dear friend and super talented make up and special effects artist Narina Carter on board on super short notice also! Narina has travelled all over the world and worked on special effects make for movie sets, so greatfull to have her on board! Check her out @narinacartercreations

Splendour style 2015 July 29 2015, 0 Comments

Well I managed to get amongst it this year to snap some splendour style pics. Thank you to all of you you managed to battle the mud and come by our stall, It was such a pleasure to have every one of you come play for dress up's, The fact we had to squeegee out the stall several times a day was a sign we had nearly every one of you come to visit, Haha!
We spotted so many amaze outfits! I love to freedom we have to be ourselves and wear anything from rainbows, sparkles at any given moment at any time of day at such an event. There was rainbows, mud, smiles, sparkles, amazing music and met some wonderful people to say the least supporting Kultcha along with bumping into the likes of @billiebillie @emmgurr @annalisemclachlan @gkcarlotta @anita_ghise @charlotte_collins @lucetteromy Byron Bay talent artist @_N_I_T_S_U_A_

Kultcha Collective's Byron Bay designer Kaidee Peel talks about the personal journey that created this exciting new 'Firebird' collection.

The Fire bird meaning the Pheonix a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated and reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. A mythological creature associated with re-creation and rising once again.

This collection inspiration came about organically after a long haul and a year that brought many good and hard challenges in my personal life, where a small break away from Kultcha just had to happen! Now we are back!

With my love of bringing findings and inspiration from the past and and recreating them into modern wares of today, This "Firebird" collection was born.  You will find vintage trims and fabric prints inserted into pockets, lots of details and embellishments onto fitted jackets that demonstrate strength and wisdom, the collection poses a hint of retro twisted into modern bohemian attire.

Enjoy the read below to find out the trails and tribulations on creating one of the most ethically conscious collections I have so far! Proud to claim the label "Made in Australia"

With love and gratitude for your continuous support, Kaidee Xx

The years events started like this. From moving house suddenly with my whole family just before we were due to give birth with our second child, we were so settled and i was in full swing nesting mode and where the home birth was to take place, when everything was suddenly uprooted, we packed for days and moved within a week to begin our new journey setting up the house and the studio for Kultcha.

My husband (Bulan) then had a sudden accident and fell a huge 3 metres and was rushed to hospital with fractured vertabrae two weeks before bubs due date, thankfully we knew by day three he as able to walk. Bulan had to spend a week in hospital lying flat in bed and wondering whether he will ever skydive again, Bulans profession is a skydive instructor.

I was determined to get back into nesting and setting up the new home and studio before the arrival of Bub, while getting in to visit Bulan two times a day, not that we got to communicate much after all the morphine but I just needed to be by his side and so did Inca Mitzi our three year old daughter who was two and a half at the time. There was not much time to direct business needs, just thankfull for the amazing small number of staff we have to help keep the business rolling.

My beloved cat Michska the Gypsy cat who has travelled far and wide with me for 14 years had a terrible accident and nearly had to have her leg amputated after dislocating her hip in a tree or fence, she spent a week at the vet hospital recovering and fighting the infection and pain. But after lots of love and nurturing, a huge vet bill both Michska and Bulan came very well and returned home.

Two weeks later when the magical time came, our baby boy Ari Uki arrived on his due date with in 2 hours. Bulan was able to take off the back brace for that time to gently come into the birth pool and be the first to catch and hold our boy with the help of a lovely friend Susie who is a registered midwife from Germany, we had only met Sus two months before, yet I had a great connection since the moment we met.

After some months we found our feet again, with my husband being at home and in the studio with more time to focus on Kultcha together and with our new growing family and have this exciting new range to share with the world.

A story of the firebird phoenix from Russian folklore;

During an expedition, Prince Ivan, the Tsarevich, wanders into an enchanted garden. There, he spies a beautiful bird with dazzling plumage that is trying to pluck golden fruit from a silver tree. Ivan captures the bird but yeilds to its entreaties to be set free. In gratitude, the Firebird gives Ivan a magic feather.

As the sun rises, thirteen enchanted princesses come from the castle to dance and play with golden apples. Ivan discloses himself and is told the castle is the property of the evil magician Kastchei, who turns captive travelers into stone. Ivan, now in love with one of the princesses, vows to enter the castle. As he opens the gates, Kastchei and his crew of grotesques march onto the scene. Kastchei tries to bewitch Ivan, but the Prince is protected by the Firebird's feather.

The Firebird then appears and casts a spell by dancing wildly among the demons of Kastchei. The bird then reveals to Ivan an egg which contains Kastchei's soul. Ivan smashes the egg, and Kastchei dies. With his death, the princesses are liberated, and the story ends happily.

DIY indoor Tee pee for children or pets March 29 2015, 0 Comments

Here is a relatively simple DIY Teepee we made. Kids love cubby houses and my cat also loves to hide and sleep in random places in our house. So not only is it such a fun project to do with your children but it brightens up a useless corner in the house, prevents the little munchkins pulling out every sheet and towel in the cupboard to make cubby houses, it also looks great, and fun for everyone.

The finished product got the approval by Mishka the cat.
Placing the bamboo so we could measure out the base triangle. You can also use a square base but we wanted it to be a corner or tripod shaped teepee so it didn't take up too much space in the room.
Inca Mitzi held the tape measure while I drew the line of chalk, this gave us a visual of where to cut and how to fit each triangle in the old bed sheet.
My trusty assistants...
These are the shapes needed for a three sided tee-pee including the door, so two sides are whole triangle shapes and one side has a split for the doorway and mini triangle for the top. (See finished example image)
What you will need:
An old sheet or find a sheet from the op-shop
A tape measure
Some chalk to mark out the triangle shape onto the sheet
A sewing machine
Bamboo poles, i have use three however if you would like a square based tee-pee with four sides you will need four.
Optional;
Trusty assistants make it more fun/ challenging
Feather trim for the seam above the doorway.
Instructions;
First place the bamboo in a standing position so the bamboo sits at equal measurements apart at the base and joins in the centre from the top as pictured, measure out the shape of the base, write it down.
Then measure from where the bamboo meets at the top right down to the floor where the bamboo meets the floor. then the width from the next piece of bamboo on the floor.
make sure to write down these measurements as you go, even better draw a diagram with all the measurements written on each side.
2 side walls will be the same and the other side will be the doorway which is very much the same but has a join about 40cm down from the top triangle point. I had added 1cm for seam allowance each on the bottom of the small triangle and the top of the doors.
Cut a split down the centre of the bottom half of the doorway sides to create the opening
Sew the small triangle to the top of the doorways, this is where to you can add feather trims orr pom pom trim would be cute too.
sew all other side walls together.
Then sew on the base to the two closed sides only. The base helps keep the tee-pee in shape a prevents the bamboo from moving around while the children play inside.
I had then cut some small strips as ties and sewed on ties on the inside of the teepee at the base corners, at the top and one each at the middle along side wall seams, this means the ties can be tied along the bamboo to prevent it from moving.
A great fun project to do with the children! feel free to email for any further questions or instructions.

Entfesselt Vogue Germany Editorial

I just had to share the love I have for this Editorial for Vogue Germany. Nomadic gypsy woman, she is bold, strong, independent. I love the use of texture and colour yet so natural and just so stunning.

As the winter is slowly coming up and sampling time is in full swing I'm getting so excited and enthusiastic and excited what can be done with layering. This editorial for Vogue Germany is everything Kultcha Collective is inspired by!

I love what the girls came up with! The concept was brought together by Megan (model) herself inspired by her American heritage. Megan and I met at Splendour in the grass 2014 in our pop up boutique Kultcha stall, she tried a few pieces on and came up with a great idea to collaborate and achieve her vision for this shoot by Taken Photography.

Behind the scenes, Never seen before! Raw images from our Spring campaign 2014 February 04 2015, 0 Comments

What a fun day of shooting to reminisce, we caught some cheeky BTS shots with my camera I thought I would share just to capture the essence of the fun we had! Here you can see the ever so talented team behind the campaign shot at Harvest cafe Newrybar, we hung out in the vege garden where the cafe picks the herbs and produce daily for the menu, the bakery where the small of freshly baked bread filled the room, we found beautiful carved wooden doors, rustic chandeliers and bay windows that opened up to the garden.

Raw buckwheat granola recipe January 28 2015, 0 Comments

I just love this with a cup of tea morning tea time, or as a breakfast cereal alternative broken into pieces with your choice of milk and fresh fruit, or just a simple snack to keep us going in the Kultcha studio. This recipe is very much inspired by Lee Hakim a raw vegan chef from Livelee foods, whom I attended one of her ever inspiring workshops of raw vegan food check out her Facebook page Livelee foods.

2 1/2 cups raw activated buckwheat groats

1/12 cups of dates soaked for 15mins

3/4 cup currants or raisins

1/2 cup coconut hredded

1/4 cup sun flour seeds soaked for 4 hours

1/4 cup pumpkin seeds soaked for 4 hours

1/4 cup flax seeds soaked for 8-12 hours in 1/2 cup water (do not drain or rinse)

1tsp cinnamon

I have added organic blueberries, cranberries and bananas from our backyard garden. previously i have used fresh cherries when they were right in season Yum!

Blend up the dates with the water

put all ingredients into a large bowl, mix well by hand.

spread onto the dehydrator lined with baking paper

Dehydrate for 8 hours, then remove the baking paper

Dehydrate for further 12 hours or until the desired texture/crunch.

Simple!
